The surprising health benefits in your morning cup of coffee

Coffee. A brew. A cuppa. Whatever you want to call it, us Brits love it.

In the UK, we drink approximately 98 million cups of coffee a day. But what hidden health benefits are hidden in your morning cuppa? Whether you love it or hate it, let’s find out.

Wow, that’s a lot of coffee!

We consume around 2 billion cups of coffee worldwide, everyday, making coffee the most popular drink in the world.

Aside from its ability to boost your energy levels, more and more research is demonstrating that coffee has a whole host of other health benefits.

Can coffee really lengthen your life?

According to research from Harvard, those who drink up to eight cups of coffee a day may slightly lower their risk of early death compared with non-drinkers.

This was a huge study, analysing data from around half a million Brits. The data found that the more coffee people drank, the lower their risk of dying over the 10-year study period. They found that drinking eight or more cups each day was linked with a 14% lower risk compared with not drinking any coffee.

How and why does it boost your energy?

Caffeine is a natural stimulant and your favourite coffee is most likely packed full of it.

When you take a sip of your morning coffee, you’ll probably notice a difference in the way your body feels fairly quickly. This is because the effects of caffeine usually start within 5 to 30 minutes and can last anywhere from 8-12 hours.

By increasing the activity in your brain and nervous system, drinking just one or two cups of coffee results in an improved mood, boost in your energy, and can make you feel less tired.

Coffee is linked to a reduced risk of what?

According to new research, coffee (between 3 and 5 cups per day) is linked to a reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s. They even suggested that drinking coffee may even lower the risk of suicide.

Be careful of drinking too much

You can have too much of a good thing, and coffee is no exception!

Having too much caffeine can cause high blood pressure, can lead to heart disease, and can cause side effects such as dizziness, sleeplessness, shakiness, an abnormal heartbeat, and headaches.

Coffee is no replacement for a healthy lifestyle

Although there seems to be a fair few health benefits to enjoying your favourite cup of coffee, it's of course, no replacement for keeping a balanced diet.
